My Japanese partner, Tom Toeda and I have just begun J→E and E→J translation as a separate business, transferring our skills from artist management of Japanese alternative music artists (because the music business is in such dire straits). We translated entertainment business contracts, correspondence and marketing translation for the past 10 years, but, that was only for in-house projects. We just joined JAT, and will go to our first meeting on Saturday. It's funny, although we're middle-aged, starting over feels fresh (and scary!).
I've been looking for sources of information and inspiration in this new approach to the field, and I must say that Mr. Vitek's essay, "It's a Small World," was a wonderful, honest, and heart-warming way to start 2003. And, in fact, I very much appreciate the Translation Journal and the hard work you and the writers put into it.

1I thoroughly enjoyed reading Per Dohler's Profile. It made me feel like "I'm not the only one..." His sense of humor and wealth of experience was conveyed very well.
